The La Verkin Area

Surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery is the city of La Verkin; located in South East Utah; near the Arizona border.  I-15 the major Interstates running diagonally NE to SW through the La Verkin area.  The area is surrounded by nature including the spectacular Zion National Park, Signal Peak, and the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.

The La Verkin area welcomed its first settlers just 1 year prior to the turn of the 19th century.  Where La Verkin got its name is somewhat a mystery and there are 3 different theories.  One theory is that it comes from the Spanish word for, “The Virgin”, but there is no evidence of Spanish influence to support that theory.  Another, more likely theory, is that La Verkin is the Indian meaning of “Beautiful Valley”.  A 3rd theory suggests La Verkin has evolved from mistranslations of handwritten maps written by early trappers for Beaver Skin Creek.
